Beginners take the most falls. Good protective gear gives you the confidence to try new moves without fear — so you progress faster.
The essential protective gear
- The helmet : your top priority, especially for kids and at the skatepark. Pick the right size and make sure it fits snugly (it shouldn't move).
- Wrist guards : you naturally catch yourself with your hands — they take the most hits.
- Knee pads : for forward falls and riding over obstacles.
- Elbow pads : useful in the bowl and on the ramp.
How to fit your protective gear right
Loose gear doesn't protect. Your helmet should sit level, with the strap snug under your chin. Knee pads and elbow pads need to stay put without cutting off your circulation. Move around to test them before you ride.
