Your first stunt scooter: the beginner's guide

ACTA illustration: choosing your beginner freestyle scooter, kids' and adult sizing

The stunt scooter (also called freestyle) is an awesome way to get into the skatepark, whether you're a kid, teen, or adult. Here's everything you need to know to pick your first one right.

💡 Already got some sessions under your belt? For a full rundown — types, sizes, compressions, levels — check our complete guide: how to pick the right stunt scooter.

Stunt scooter or commuter scooter?

Don't mix these up : a stunt scooter is built for tricks at the skatepark and on street. It's rigid, one solid piece, no hand brake or folding system. For everyday rides, go for a commuter or electric scooter instead.

Complete or build-your-own?

For starting out, grab a complete stunt scooter : assembled, tuned, ready to ride. You can customize it later with your own wheels, grips, or bar.

What size / what age?

  • « Mini » size : made for the youngest kids and smaller builds.
  • Standard size : once your kid can hold the bar comfortably, arms slightly bent, bar at hip to belly height.

A bar that's too high or too low messes with your progress : it's the #1 thing to check.

The anatomy of a stunt scooter

  • The deck : the platform where your feet go.
  • The bar : your control zone ; its height must fit you right.
  • The fork : connects the front wheel to the bar.
  • The wheels (110mm standard) : their type changes how it feels (light, fast, durable).
  • The grips : for grip and hand comfort.

Your first tricks

  1. Master balance, turns, and braking first.
  2. Learn the bunny hop (jump with both feet while the scooter stays under you).
  3. Move onto small obstacles and ramps at the skatepark.
  4. Progress to the barspin (bar rotation) and tailwhip.

Tip : a ramp at home speeds up progress like crazy.

Safety

Helmet is a must, especially for kids. Knee pads and wrist guards are strongly recommended at the skatepark.

Maintenance & wear parts

Keep tightening the bolts regularly (bar, fork, wheels). 110mm wheels and grips wear fastest — easy to swap out to give your scooter a fresh look.

Beginner mistakes to avoid

  • Grabbing a commuter scooter thinking it'll do freestyle (it won't hold up).
  • Getting a bar that doesn't fit your kid's size.
  • Skipping the helmet from day one.

Which ACTA stunt scooter to pick?

To start out : the FS Teal (most accessible) or the F2 Bleu (tough). For the littlest riders : the Mini Neochrome. To level up : the KSP Complete (Black, Neochrome, or Gold). Everything's in the Stunt Scooter collection (and Kids).
